Programs for Aspiring Principals

This suite of programs is designed to provide aspiring principals with principal-aligned leadership development opportunities. By participating in one (or more) of these programs, our alum gain the knowledge, experiences, and confidence to be effective leaders.

 

VAL-ED Assessment

The Vanderbilt Assessment of Leadership in Education (VAL-ED) is a research-based, 360-degree school leadership diagnostic tool. VAL-ED focuses on gathering evidence of leadership competencies and behaviors that are specific to the role of a principal.

Interested school leaders will complete two administrations of the VAL-ED leadership diagnostic, which they will then integrate into their leadership development planning processes.

Best for: Any school leader looking for 360-degree feedback on their leadership.

Chicago Principal Endorsement Program

Together with CPS departments, principals, and university partners, this semester-long principal-led learning sessions and year-long series of CPS department-led events exposes aspiring principals to mentorship and professional learning designed for aspiring CPS principals. The Principal Endorsement Program supplements any program supporting the PEL Administrative Endorsement (formerly known as the Type 75).

This professional learning series supplements any program supporting the Illinois Principal Endorsement (formerly known as the Type 75). Participants will:

• Engage in 6 principal-led sessions for aspiring principals, run on a semester basis
• Attend 3 CPS intern events, run on a yearlong basis
• Be featured in a profile book for aspiring CPS principals
• Incur zero cost to participate

Best for: Principal endorsement candidates currently enrolled in degree programs.

Aspiring Principals Professional Learning Community

The Aspiring Principals Professional Learning Community aims to equip aspiring principals with a deeper understanding of the skills needed to take on a principal position. This includes the perception of the principal role through different lenses and examining the different challenges principals face in their first year.

Best for: Assistant principals interested in the principalship as a potential career path.

Applications are currently open and close on August 20.

Leadership Bridge

In this on-the-job development program, assistant principals will receive individualized leadership coaching from an external partner in close collaboration with their principal.

Best for: Pairs of principals and assistant principals who are less than two years out from transitioning.
